The Fetal Medicine Centre at Birmingham Women’s Hospital received its official opening on Friday 27th July.
We were delighted that MP for Edgbaston, Gisela Stuart, a strong supporter of The Women’s, officially opened the new centre, joined by former patients and their families.
The new £500k Fetal Medicine Centre has replaced the former unit and is the only designated Regional Centre of its kind in the West Midlands. The centre cares for over 6500 patients per annum, whose babies require investigation and treatment.
Founded at Birmingham Women’s Hospital in 1991, the Fetal Medicine Centre is both nationally and internationally renowned. Women with high risk pregnancies are referred to the centre not only regionally but from across the country due to the expertise of the centre’s staff.
Clinical Lead for Fetal Medicine, Professor Mark Kilby explained, “The new centre will allow an environment, fit for the 21st century, for both patients and staff to manage ‘complex’ pregnancies. We treat pregnancies where babies are ill whilst still in the womb and these new facilities will allow better care for patients and their relatives; as well as a better environment for staff”.
