Hello My Name Is….at Birmingham Women’s Hospital

This NHS Change Day (11th March), small actions will be making a big difference as Birmingham Women’s Hospital pledges it’s support to the campaign that has taken the country by storm ‘Hello my name is..’

#Hello My Name is.. was founded in 2014 by Dr Kate Granger, a Consultant and a terminally ill cancer patient. During a hospital stay she made the stark observation that many staff looking after her did not introduce themselves.

At Birmingham Women’s, we are launching our own campaign on the 11th March to encourage staff in all areas, departments and in whatever roles to introduce themselves verbally to the patients and visitors with whom they come into contact with.

Chief Executive Professor Ros Keeton commented, “Research has shown that patient’s appreciate basic personal touches. So telling someone our name will go a long way to helping them feel better about being in hospital.”

On the 11th, we are asking as many staff as possible to join in and create a powerful photo wall featuring staff from all areas of the hospital. All photos will be displayed in the main entrance to our patients and visitors.

By signing up to ‘Hello My Name Is’ we pledge to:
• Always introduce ourselves to patients and visitors
• Treat them as we would a member of our own family or friends
• Always see the person behind the condition
• Treat people with respect and dignity

This is very much reinforcing our own values at the Women’s and we are often complimented on our friendliness and ability to make our patients feel at ease.

Ros Keeton added, “By taking part in this campaign and pledging our commitment we are sending a message to our patients and visitors that we are committed to providing them with the best experience and that can start with the simplest of gestures, our name.”
